monkey-mind-2024
Monkey Mind [2025]

A pair of hands unfastens a garment, and the opening becomes an archway. Beyond it, far below and very small, a lone figure sits in stillness inside a bare, vaulted chamber, lit from somewhere we cannot see. Liquid runs down the walls that frame him, as though the threshold itself were alive and unable to hold still. The scale is unsettling: the hands are enormous, the meditating figure almost nothing, yet he is the only one in the image who is not moving. Which is the real space here, the vast body that surrounds the doorway or the quiet room within it? Is the figure sheltered by what encloses him, or besieged by it? The hands could be opening or closing; we arrive at the moment where we cannot tell. What does it mean to sit still while everything around you pulls, drips, and invites? Perhaps the mind cannot be shut against what tempts it, only observed from a distance, the way the figure observes the wall. The work leaves the gesture unfinished, and with it the question of whether stillness is a refuge from desire or simply a different way of being inside it.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0725/7568/0577/files/702-MonkeyMind_FabianArtunduaga_uncopy.webp?v=1792550797
